24-hour Emergency Spill Response

Emergency Spill Response

The project was initiated as a late night emergency spill response. A release of fuel oil from a UST caused petroleum product to collect under a nearby underground parking garage foundation. ENSAT was able to prevent product from entering the city sanitary sewer system by its quick response. The leaking 20,000-gallon UST and underlying contaminated soil were removed and interim product recovery operations were performed. ENSAT assessed the extent of contamination and determined aquifer characteristics and remedial options. Conceptual and mechanical remedial designs were developed applying an innovative design which allowed a single treatment system to economically address contamination in the area of the former UST and under the parking garage. The remediation system incorporated a single high-vacuum positive displacement blower to recover total fluids (i.e., vapor, water, and product) from 10 recovery wells and vapor only from two additional wells.

ENSAT conducted asbestos surveys in the site buildings, designed removal specifications, and developed maintenance procedures for asbestos that would remain in the building. This work was conducted in phases and took several years to complete.

ENSAT responded to a second emergency hazardous material spill incident at the site when a fuel line strainer gasket in the penthouse mechanical area ruptured. Fuel from the line leaked into the building interior through expansion joints and affected seven floors of the building. ENSAT addressed indoor air quality issues resulting from the release.
