Relocation
of Fiber Optic Repeater Site
ENSAT
Corporation is under contract to relocate a live fiber optic repeater
site in Southern California for WorldCom. Scope of work includes
form and pour concrete footers, fabrication and installation of
elevated steel platform, setting new equipment shelter on platform,
all electrical and communication wiring and relocation of live fiber
optic cables from existing shelter to new shelter.

Renewal
of Operations and Maintenance Contract for Remediation Systems
ENSAT
Corporation has renewed contracts to perform regular system operation
and maintenance, monthly discharge monitoring, and quarterly groundwater
sampling and monitoring for existing clients in Maryland, D.C. and
Virginia.

Water
Supply Analysis for Sustainable Development Foundation in West Virginia
ENSAT
Corporation is under contract to The Lightstone Foundation, a sustainable
community development foundation in West Virginia, to analyze water
supply availability options for future infrastructure needs. Future
work includes quarterly water quality monitoring for all springs

Fuel and Water Cooling Tanks at Telecommunications Site in Northern
California ENSAT Corporation recently completed the installation
of diesel fuel storage tanks for emergency generator system, and
back-up cooling water storage tanks. Scope of work included placement
of excavation shoring system, two 20,000 gallon underground diesel
tanks, all associated fuel piping, piping and electronic leak detection
system, two 30,000 gallon underground water storage tanks, submersible
water pumps, and associated water piping for supplemental cooling
system for electronic communications equipment.

Response Clean-up on I-81
ENSAT
Corporation recently conducted remediation of a diesel spill on
I-81 in Frederick County, Virginia. Scope of work included soil
removal, product removal, and site restoration.

Training for Northern Virginia Consulting Firm
ENSAT
Corporation has received authorization to provide Hazwoper Training
to industrial clients in Virginia. Training includes 40 hr., 24
hr., and 8 hr. refresher classes as well as confined space awareness
classes.

Projects for Summer, 2000!
Shenandoah County Source Water Assessment and Planning
ENSAT has won a contract to provide surface water and groundwater assessment and planning assistance to Shenandoah County, Virginia. This two year project will involve complex hydrogeological investigations in karst geology, and assessment of the fate and transport of contaminants in areas that influence source water supply. ENSAT will also train a corps of volunteers to conduct contaminant inventories for the 68 public systems in the county.

Hydrogeologic Assessment of Albemarle County, Virginia
ENSAT is proud to announce that we have recently received notification of selection as contractor for multi-year hydrogeologic investigations of Albemarle County, Virginia. Work also includes development of policies and ordinances to protect the quantity and quality of the county's groundwater resources. Extensive use of "state of the shelf" digital mapping and analyses will be used to complete this work. This new program confirms the county's leadership as an innovator in environmental protection and is perhaps the boldest groundwater initiative undertaken by a single locality in the state.

Rural Preservation Ordinance
ENSAT has been invited to prepare a comprehensive rural preservation ordinance for a rapidly urbanizing locality in Virginia. Funded by a newly organized quality of life citizen's group, this challenging project will integrate economic, environmental, and social concerns using a diverse array of implementation strategies including regulatory and non-regulatory means. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this project is the process preparation and marketing of a complete ordinance, supported by a broad cross-section of local stakeholders, prior to development of a similar ordinance by local government staff.

Hydrogeologic Assessment of Barboursville, Virginia
ENSAT Corporation has begun a hydrogeological characterization of Barboursville, Virginia, located within a mesozoic basin in the central Piedmont of Virginia. The study was prompted by the occurrence of MTBE detected in domestic groundwater wells earlier this year. Preliminary work plans require highİresolution resistivity and geophysical survey, fracture trace analysis, installation of several deep bedrock wells, aquifer test(s) in order to assess the geological and groundwater dynamics of the area, and digital map development and contaminant flow analyses.

New
Projects for Spring, 2000!
Protecting Groundwater in Shenandoah National Park
ENSAT has been awarded a project by the National Park Service to evaluate the existing subsurface septic systems throughout the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. As a part of the evaluation, ENSAT is classifying the soil at each location for suitability for the installation of a properly functioning drainfield system. Where needed, ENSAT will be making recommendations concerning drainfield replacement and forwarding the design of each new drainfield to the Park.

Brownfield Restoration in Northern Virginia
ENSAT is now under contract to Norfolk Southern Railroad to remediate soils contaminated with hazardous and non-hazardous waste. The site is part of an old railroad complex in Alexandria, Virginia that was also used as a dump. Engaged in partnerships with Engineering Consulting Services (ECS), and Camp, Dresser, and McKee (CDM), ENSAT will also work to characterize any waste found on the site.

Analysis of Sediment-water Quality Relationships for Homebuilders
ENSAT and MapTech Inc. has been awarded a contract by the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) to research the relationship between construction activity, sediment, and water quality. The study will consist of two parts. Part I involves a literature review to (a) evaluate the extent of scientific support for sediment loading toxicity regulatory criteria and (b) compare and assess testing methods used in sediment load monitoring throughout the United States. Part II is also a literature review that focuses on technical evidence of construction sites as important sources of sediment to surface water bodies. The work to complete both parts is similar in scope and schedule, so work described in this plan is intended to encompass the completion of both parts.
ENSAT/MapTech will assess the technical basis on which (1) sediment in the water column is attributed to construction sites in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) protocol, (2) water column sediment loads regulatory criteria are established, and (3) water column sediment concentrations are measured.

Restoration of MTBE-Contaminated Groundwater
ENSAT has a number of new projects underway in Virginia and Maryland to restore groundwater contaminated with methyl-tert-butyl-ethylene (MTBE), a gasoline additive that has been found in groundwater supplies throughout the U.S. These projects involve the identification of the extent of contamination and the construction of extraction and treatment systems to clean the water.

ENSAT Breaks New Ground with EPA Facility Lead Contract
ENSAT and its client are one of the first groups in the region to initiate a remedial action under the EPA’s Facility-Lead Corrective Action program. The Facility-Lead is a new federal program designed to promote fast-track clean-up of certain RCRA sites where a responsible party has shown a significant voluntary commitment to corrective action at the site. ENSAT’s scope of work for the investigative phase includes multi-media sampling, a data quality assurance plan, proposed interim measures, a public participation plan, and submittal of reports to EPA and the state.
